One of the most iconic esports teams in Korea, T1, has announced their new roster and coaching staff for 2022. Although it looks like there is only one change from last year’s team, this announcement means huge news for T1 and their fans.

After a long time, T1 will finally have a five-man stable roster.

At Worlds 2017, T1 (SKT T1) experienced the biggest upset they ever had, yielding the Summoners’ Cup to SSG, their arch-nemesis, in the grand finals (you might remember the “Faker crying” videos and memes). While that signified the start of T1 and Faker’s fall, which you could read more in our article about Faker, from that point on, T1 couldn’t have a single roster that they could rely on all year long. The team hopes to change that in 2022.

The top lane dilemma

Of course, creating such a roster after almost four years is no easy task. Starting by losing your top laner doesn’t help at all. Canna, T1’s young prodigy, announced that he was promised to let go at the end of the season by T1’s COO John Kim, who passed away in July. Because it was a verbal agreement, Canna had a hard time proving that they had come to such an agreement. But in the end T1 did let him go.

Canna’s transfer created a conflict between DWG KIA and Nongshim RedForce. T1 did not want to sell such a good top laner to DK and let them get stronger, and because NS was also trying to get Ghost from DK, things got really complicated at some point. In the end, the teams reached an agreement, and Canna went to NS.

This meant T1 had to find a new top laner. Although there were talks of TheShy and Nuguri, they were proven false one by one. T1 probably didn’t want TheShy at all, as that would contradict with how they tried to build the team during the last few years. Nuguri then announced he would take a sabbatical, making the transfer impossible.

For many, T1’s next top laner was Zeus all along. He is a young prodigy just like Canna and Korean League of Legends fans believe he has what it takes to be even better than him. We will see if that’s true. For what it’s worth, Zeus is a great player on solo queue and T1’s secondary team. It is exciting to see him getting a shot at the main roster.

Coaching staff

The second question mark of T1’s League of Legends team was the coaching staff. T1 fired their original coaching staff in the middle of the LCK 2021 Summer Season, claiming they have to change things. Many analysts and fans believe that it was the right call, as the players felt so much more confident about the game, as far as they could infer from the voice comms.

Daeny & Zefa were replaced by Stardust & Moment. Stardust looked like he was the interim head coach, but it is known that general manager Polt took over the things. He was rumoured to be the HC of the team before 2021, but maybe because T1 was afraid of causing some eyebrows to raise, Polt didn’t meddle in the coaching business.

Stardust left the team to pursue other opportunities in 2022, but T1 did manage to create a new coaching staff without him. General Manager Polt will also take the Head Coach position. Bengi will join the team as a coach. According to Joe Marsh, CEO of T1, Faker asked for a pro player to join the coaching staff to bounce some ideas. Bengi will fill that position.

Asper, young support player, will be the sixth man of T1’s main roster and also a junior coach. Thus, the coaching staff of T1 will be completed.

Around Faker, T1 managed to create a roster with young players who have incredible potential. Oner and Gumayusi’s contracts are extended, and Joe Marsh announced that they will talk with Keria and Zeus during the year to extend their contracts too. Faker, who is coming to the last few years of his professional career, will keep on leading and helping these youngsters, and his legacy will be even more valuable for T1 with such a roster.
