History of video games has seen lots of great franchises, but the studios which were able to adapt their historic games to what modern gamers expect created unforgettable games. Let’s go over some of the best reboots in history, mainly more modern ones.

A reboot is reimagining a game in general, like introducing new mechanics, making tweaks in the story and making the rebooted game a new starting point for the series. Don’t mistake it with remakes or remastered games, a reboot must change the idea behind the game fundamentally.
Grand Theft Auto III

You know Grand Theft Auto from Rockstar Games as one of the best video game franchises in history today, but GTA 3, a fairly outdated game, is what set the tone for the upcoming games. Set in Liberty City, inspired by New York, GTA 3 is considered to be the first 3D game in the series, and changed the point of view from top-down to third-person.
GTA 3 included a great open-world design, an iconic main character and an interesting plot. The series is known for its success at creating the open world environment, and favoring player freedom instead of pushing the story. You could consider GTA 3 as the first major success at this approach from Rockstar Games.
God of War
This game doesn’t even require any introduction: God of War is one of the most famous video game franchises and Sony took it even further with the installment in 2018. This new God of War game brought in a “new” old-man Kratos and we look very closely at his relationship with his son, Atreus. Of course, after so many years, new GoW brought new mechanics, boosted by newer technologies.
You are able to play God of War from PC too since January 14, 2022. If you are looking for a game to play this weekend and you still haven’t played God of War, I encourage you to play it.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
One of the oldest franchises, The Legend of Zelda met the Z generation mainly with Breath of the Wild. It raised significant attention at the time of its release, mainly because of its new approach to the open world, similar to Grand Theft Auto. This new Zelda game favored player freedom, and you could easily ignore the main quest while trying out the new mechanics and going through the new plot which was set at the end of the Zelda timeline.
This new game saw great success considering it is a Nintendo exclusive game, and Breath of the Wild is considered as the best Zelda game by many. If you have a Nintendo Switch, there will be a new sequel coming out soon in 2022.
Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider is also a very old franchise, but the game released in 2013 drastically changed the idea of Tomb Raider, introducing the series to modern times with a modern look. Narrating the story of how Lara Croft became the Tomb Raider, the game developed in 2013 had major success.
It also brought new gameplay mechanics, showing Lara Croft in vulnerable situations, trying to survive, making her a more “human” character, according to developers. Rebooting loved franchises isn’t always easy, but Tomb Raider was a successful one, enlarging the legend of this series.
Resident Evil 7

Throughout its timeline, Resident Evil saw many changes, but RE7 is loved by the fans because of the way it rebooted the popular franchise. With a great plot and great mechanics, Resident Evil 7 caught attention, and also set the tone for a more modern Resident Evil series.
With RE7, the game went back to its root as a horror/adventure game with less “action”, interesting puzzles, and you really connect with Ethan Winters. If you still haven’t played RE7, even if you are not a horror fan, you should. For the lovers of the game, Resident Evil Village followed the same formula. Don’t miss the chance of meeting Lady Dimitrescu there.
If you are a “gamer” who is interested in these rebooted masterpieces, certainly you have an interest in esports as well. Visit Luckbox to find out about esports, and even place your bets.
