PGL Major Antwerp 2022: Mid-tournament update

We are in the middle of the PGL Major Antwerp 2022 Legends Stage and we already have two “Champions” now. Natus Vincere and Team Spirit secured advancing to the next round, winning all three of their games. On the contrary, Challengers surprise Bad News Eagles are eliminated, together with IEM Dallas NA winner Team Liquid.

The remaining are the fourteen teams that are either 2-1 or 1-2 in the first three games. Together with today’s games, nine more games will be played to decide the six of them going to the Champions Stage, or playoffs. Let’s have a look at what happened since the start of Legends Stage.

Brief summary of the Legends Stage

Heroic 16 11 Team Liquid
Copenhagen Flames 16 14 Bad News Eagles
Ninjas in Pyjamas 16 4 Team Vitality
Cloud9 16 12 Outsiders
FaZe Clan 8 16 ENCE
FURIA Esports 12 16 Team Spirit
Natus Vincere 19 17 G2 Esports
BIG 16 11 Imperial

The first round of Legends Stage witnessed two big matchups as you can see from the table above: Cloud9 vs Outsiders, and Natus Vincere vs G2 Esports. Thanks to Ax1Le’s strong showing on Mirage, Cloud9 took the win over Outsiders, while NAVI vs G2 went to overtime as neither of them could secure an advantage. Finally, the GOAT s1mple and Perfecto played an amazing 3v5 to finish the job.

After defeating FURIA Esports, Team Spirit kept on trying their hardest. They defeated Heroic on Nuke to face the Copenhagen Flames in Round 3. After a 16-10 loss on Vertigo, Spirit won Mirage and Ancient confidently after a special showing from both degster and magixx.

On the other hand, Natus Vincere needed to go through BIG in the second round. A 16-8 defeat on Ancient put NAVI in a great spot and they didn’t really have any problems advancing to the next round. Their opponent was Ninjas in Pyjamas next round, and NAVI started the series greatly once again with a 16-6 performance on Inferno. NIP stole a 16-14 to tie the series on Mirage, but NAVI pulled the plug on Ancient, following a 16-4 defeat.

There were some interesting performances from the rest of the matches: Outsiders defeated Vitality in the second round to put them on the brink of elimination. VIT defeated TL 2-0 to stay alive, and they will face BIG to keep their hopes alive today. In round three, Heroic defeated G2 Esports in overtime, making the “G2 OT” meme a reality once again. G2 will have to go through a very strong Outsiders to survive.

Outsiders are here because of their loss against ENCE. All six matches remaining in the fourth round look interesting, meaning that the “stay alive or go home” series of the fifth round will be even more spectacular.

For BIG, VIT, G2, Outsiders, Cloud9 and Imperial, this is their last chance. The rest of them will have a second opportunity in the fifth round even if they lose. But these six teams are on the brink of missing playoffs at the most important CS:GO tournament of the year.

Looking at the names, all these organizations surely hate to be here. Team Vitality, G2 Esports and Outsiders? Even more. This is a big disaster for these teams if they get eliminated, but their mistakes during the earlier rounds got them here and now they have to play big. Expect huge plays from players with great characters, such as ZywOo and NiKo. They are their team’s only hopes.
