Evil Geniuses is reportedly due to make another change to its line-up and is planning to sign Ismail "refrezh" Ali.
Evil Geniuses to acquire Ismail "refrezh" Ali from Sprout
That's according to Blix.gg, who report that Evil Geniuses had reached a verbal agreement for refrezh to join the team. The Danish player would be joining the squad to replace the Canadian rifler Jadan "HexT" Postma, who joined the main Evil Geniuses roster in August last year.
His would-be replacement refrezh is currently with Sprout, although he has been on their bench since late February this year. He joined the team back in August 2022, taking on the role of the in-game leader. Unfortunately, however, Sprout ultimately underperformed - and while they qualified for the IEM Rio Major, they otherwise failed to make a name for themselves in any high-profile international tournaments. As such, he was ultimately replaced by Aaron "AZR" Ward, who joined Sprout earlier this month.
Should the reports prove accurate, refrezh's new team has also been facing some challenges in recent months. Evil Geniuses has had a troubled 2023 season so far, having failed to qualify for the BLAST.tv Paris Major. Additionally, the team ranked in a dismal 29th - 32nd place at the ongoing ESL Pro League Season 17 and failed to win even a single match at IEM Katowice 2023 - where they ranked in 21st - 24th place.
These struggles are hardly anything new either - the team closed out the 2022 season with a 20th - 22nd place result at the IEM Rio Major, and has had very little to brag about in recent years. As such, the team has been making some changes to its roster. Evil Geniuses parted ways with Tsvetelin "CeRq" Dimitrov in January this year, before promoting Jerric "wiz" Jiang to the main team from Evil Geniuses Black.
It remains to be seen if Evil Geniuses can reverse their poor fortunes with a rejuvenated roster.
