Counter Logic Gaming is reportedly set to sell off its LCS roster and team slot, as the organisation prepares for mass layoffs with plans to shut down operations.
Counter Logic Gaming to shut down esports operations
That's according to a report from journalist Travis Gafford, who reports that Counter Logic Gaming is looking to sell off its LCS team and dissolve its esports brand entirely.
According to Gafford, staff were informed that they would be laid off by Saturday - including even company president George “HotshotGG” Georgallidis. Only the company's League of Legends division will be safe from the layoffs, as it is expected to be sold to NRG Esports in the very near future.
NRG last competed in League of Legends in 2016, and has several esports teams in other titles - perhaps most notably including their Valorant team. Should the organisation acquire Counter Logic Gaming's LCS division, it would mark its fifth esports team.
Outside of League of Legends, the report made no mention of Counter Logic Gaming's other esports efforts, putting the future of teams such as the organisation's female-led CS:GO team in doubt.
The potential departure of Counter Logic Gaming, who has been a part of the League of Legends scene since 2010, would mark the end of an era. And troublingly, it comes just days after reports of TSM's financial difficulties, with reports indicating that their League of Legends team may soon also find itself on the chopping block.
TSM CEO Andy “Reginald” Dinh responded to the reports by stating that the company remains "committed to esports," bringing attention to the organisation's ongoing plans to rejoin the CS:GO scene. However, he did not comment on the future of TSM's League of Legends efforts.
It's a sad day for League of Legends, with two veterans of the scene seemingly due to shut down their League efforts in the near future.
