A new Witcher game announced, will we live long enough to see it?

"We're happy to announce that the next installment in The Witcher series of video games is currently in development, kicking off a new saga for the franchise," the announcement reads.

That does not mean you should expect more Geralt, or that the game will be called The Witcher 4 - the studio is clear that the original trilogy stands on its own - but there are still plenty of stories to explore in The Witcher universe.

We already knew that The Witcher 4 would be released at some point. What we do know is that it will not be coming anytime soon, because it's clear that the developer already has a lot going on.

What the devs doin’?

With The Witcher 3, developer CD Projekt Red created a vast and fully explorable fantasy world that tells stories players will talk about for years to come. It has taken the Witcher series to new heights of success. With the 10-hour expansion, they have also given players 16 free downloadable content packs.

CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kiciński once said in an interview: "The first three 'Witcher' were by definition a trilogy, so we just could not call the next game 'The Witcher 4'. Of course, that does not mean we are leaving the world of The Witcher. The Witcher is one of two franchises on which the company's future activities will be built. Unfortunately, that's all I can reveal today." In short, while CD Projekt Red has not directly confirmed that there will ever be a Witcher 4, it's certainly not completely out of the question.

Should The Witcher 4 be released on PC or on consoles in the future, it's entirely possible that a new face could take over. It would certainly be a lot of new ground to break, especially seeing how the new Witcher is trying to make a name for itself in these early years.
