China’s LPL has passed the midpoint, and there is a wild competition between the championship contenders. Currently, three teams are fighting for first place with 9-1 records, followed by four with above 50% win rates. JDG made their record 10-1 after their latest victory against Invictus Gaming. Plus, there is always room for FPX and BLG to come back and join the race.

Rookie’s Victory Five, knight’s Top Esports follow (9-1) as Kanavi’s JD Gaming lead the league with ten wins and one loss. It’s a championship race unlike any other LoL competition. At the bottom of the table, Rare Atom, LGD Gaming, Invictus Gaming and finally the 0-9 Team WE look stuck.

Let’s look at some crucial matches that have been played since then. Although they were a clear championship contender at the start of the season, Doinb’s LNG Esports was defeated 2-1 by Oh My God in week three, starting an unlucky streak for them. Top Esports, JD Gaming, FunPlus Phoenix and Royal Never Give Up defeated LNG in the following weeks and they are out of the first place competition now.
Victory Five’s game against Royal Never Give Up was a very close one, but V5 managed to survive with a 2-1 win while they were missing their superstar mid laner, Rookie. Another important victory came against Worlds 2021 champions EDward Gaming. However, V5 was defeated by underperforming Weibo Gaming last week, hurting their undefeated run.
Summit, who left Cloud9 after spring season, joined FunPlus Phoenix and became the team’s starter top laner with the match against JD Gaming. Thanks to his outstanding performance and synergy with the superstar jungler Clid, FPX defeated the unstoppable JDG side and joined the playoffs contention after a poor start. Since then, FPX won against LGD and LNG, but a surprising loss against OMG stopped their good run. They will have to get back up again.
With these surprising victories, Oh My God look like they can make playoffs without superstars carrying them. They were very close to bringing down Top Esports last week and will face WBG and TT this week, increasing their chances of getting another 2-0 week to stay in the playoffs zone.
The all-Chinese superteam of the season is Top Esports, as RNG failed to perform as well as last season, where they won MSI 2022. TES managed to take down FPX, LNG, Weibo and RNG until their last game against EDward Gaming. EDG could not secure the decider as TES moved on with another victory against them.
Finally, the 10-1 leaders JD Gaming. They were surprised by Summit’s performance when they played against FunPlus Phoenix, but aside from that, FPX has played perfectly. They took down Top Esports in the first week of LPL and will face RNG and V5 in week eight. They will compete in those games as favourites: even Victory Five don’t look as strong as JDG.

EDG is far from the first place race of the LPL, and this might be their last chance to get a good spot for the playoffs. They will first face LGD Gaming and the underperforming RNG to fix things.
JDG faces Bilibili Gaming as the favourites, while V5 takes on LNG Esports as their sole match of the week. Both should be fine against their opponents. The same goes for Top Esports who faces Rare Atom and Ultra Prime.
